CHARLES CITY — It was a close game well into the second quarter with Charles City repeatedly tying it after Iowa Fall-Alden would take momentary leads.

Then came the good ol’ “4-point play”.

With the score tied at 16 during non-conference girls basketball action Monday at Comet gym, Cadet junior Grace Renaud managed to score a layup while drawing a foul. Renaud went on to complete the 3-point play, but a Charles City player was whistled for a misplaced elbow during the box-out.

With the Comets in the double-bonus penalty, that gave Renaud two more free throws. She made both ends, only to have the latter “fifth point” waived off due to a lane violation.

Not only did the sequence put the Cadets up for good, it sparked an 18-0 run as Iowa Falls-Alden went on to win going away in a 66-32 final.

Taylor Vanatter had 17 points, Katie Meyer scored 15 and Renaud had 13 for the Cadets (7-5), who utilized their size advantage to dominate the glass on both sides of the floor.

The Cadets also managed to put on a pick-and-roll clinic and seemed to always reward and assist back-door cutters for numerous layups.

Charles City managed to take a 4-0 lead and later tied it at 8 with a steal and off-hand finish by Comet sophomore Lynn Hoeft.

But it was the Cadets who would win the turnover battle as their tenacious baseline-to-baseline defense grew more assertive as the lead widened.

Charles City junior Jodie Sindlinger “unofficially” recorded a double-double with 10 points — all four of her in-the-paint field goals were assisted by entry passes from senior guard Payton Reams.

Charles City fell to 0-10 for the year and will host New Hampton Tuesday in the first game of a girls-boys varsity doubleheader at Comet Gym starting at approximately 6:30 p.m.
