Comet wrestlers go 1-1 at triangular

WAUKON — The Charles City wrestling team managed to depart from Thursday’s triangular hosted by Waukon with its second Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet victory of the season.

After falling to Waverly-Shell Rock 54-22 in their first dual of the night, the Comets rebounded with a 43-36 win over the hosting Indians.

Charles City senior Sam Niichel recorded victories in two different weight classes. The first was a 12-0 shutout major decision over Go-Hawk Jentry Staack in a 182-pound bout, then Niichel stuck Waukon’s Landon Berns at the end of the second period of their 195-pound match.

Comet sophomore Dajon Richards was another two-time winner on Thursday with a 1:40 fall victory over Ethyn Chestnut of W-SR before earning a 15-7 major decision over Waukon’s Marcus Gibbs, both in the 106-pound class.

With Waukon due to earn a forfeit victory in the final 170-match in the dual against Charles City, the Comets needed a pair of wins ahead of that to seal the victory.

They got them when Dylan Koresh pinned Nathan Johnson midway through the second period of their 152-pound match, and Elliott Sinnwell earning a 12-2 major decision over Carter Benzing in the 160-pound bout.

Comet freshman Roush Jaeger also had a fall victory in the dual against the Indians when he pinned Lance Egan 4:32 into their 138-pound match.

Against the Go-Hawks, the Comets got off to a great start in winning the first three matches wrestled.

Sophomore Jack Sindlinger started things off with a fall victory over Gavin Wedemeier late in the second period of their 170-pound match.

Then after Niichel defeated Staack and the Go-Hawks being awarded a forfeit victory in the subsequent 195-pound match, Comet senior Josh Halligan stopped Luke Walker at the end of the first period of their 220-pound match.

In junior varsity action, Charles City senior Ciana Sonberg was victorious in both of her 182-pound matches.
