CHARLES CITY — Sometimes what you don’t know won’t hurt you.

Charles City sophomore Cade Schmidt didn’t know he was dangerously close in setting a two-game series record for the Comet bowling program. It may have better off that he didn’t.

“I didn’t know it was a record until my dad told me afterwards,” Schmidt said after rolling a pair of 263 games for a new CC standard of 526, Friday during a dual against Tripoli at Comet Bowl.

“If I known I had a chance for it beforehand, I probably wouldn’t have gotten it,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt’s highest game bowled is a 293.

“He has a nice ball, but sometimes he puts a little too much spin on it,” Charles City head coach Doug Bohlen said of Schmidt, who broke into the CC’s varsity lineup midway through his freshman season last year.

“Today he bowled within himself,” Bohlen said.

The Comets rolled out several other personal-bests while handily defeating the Panthers in all four matches bowled Friday. In the varsity boys match, Charles City won 3,129 to 2,501 with senior Noah Reams attaining a personal-best series of 455 that included a 268 game.

The Comet boys are now 6-1 for the season.

In the girls varsity match, seniors Aryah Nelson and Baili Girkin rolled respective personal-best series of 442 and 440 while helping the Comets reach a season-best team score of 3,065 — more than 1,000 pins better than the Panthers — while improving their undefeated record to 7-0.

For the first time this season, the Comets had three bowlers bowl 400 series with junior Madison Ross contributing with a 416. The Comet girls also combined forces for scores of 234 and 237 during the Baker Rotation round.

In the boys junior varsity match, which the Comets won 2,649 to 1,735, Garrett Gerholdt rolled a person-best series of 422 which included a 267 game.

Dawson Soloman had a 402 series for the Comet JV boys.

The Comet junior varsity girls compiled a season-high 2,547 pinfall while defeating a Tripoli makeshift team that was partially filled by Charles City bowlers.
