CHARLES CITY — Cars tend to come in three classes.

Those that look good. Those that go fast. Those that look good while going fast.

Contestants at the Cub Scout Pack 4166 Pinewood Derby held Sunday at St. John Evangelical Church for the most part strove for the third category.

Like qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, your entry often to needed to exceed 200 miles per hour based on scale for division honors.

“Look at this,” someone said after removing a winning entry from the track. “The wheels are still turning.”

Miniature motors were not allowed. But a lot of advanced aerodynamic design and weight-based gravity calculations went into these projects, especially in the open division where fathers of the scouts — several of whom were Boy Scout derby “engineers” themselves — were allowed to compete in the open division then show some of the innovations they’ve come up with through years of trial and error.

The Charles City pack has been holding these derbies for more than 30 years.
