WAVERLY — In case you didn’t know, spring has sprung … at least on the calendar.

Tuesday was the first day of spring, but the overcast and ice-sustaining conditions didn’t beckon too many people outdoors.

Including Northeast Iowa Conference track and field athletes.

The Charles City Comets boys and girls track teams participated in the NEIC Indoor Meet during the first day of spring at Wartburg College.

It was the last indoor meet of the season for either team. The outdoor season starts up for both Charles City teams next Thursday (March 29) at the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational.

The Comet boys won two relay events.

The 4-by-800 foursome of Gavin Connell, Mason Deeter, Austin Connerly and Antwone Cooper recorded a first-place time of 9 minutes, 2.01 seconds, well ahead of runner-up Waverly-Shell Rock (9:10.11).

Connell also placed second in the 800 run (2:08.66) behind New Hampton’s Keagan John (2:06.29)

In the 1,600 distance medley, Comets John Sibuma, Hakeem Sharief, Antwone Cooper and Deeter won with a first-place time of 4 minutes, exactly — more than 2 seconds ahead runner-up Decorah.

Charles City’s 4-by-60 shuttle hurdle relay team of Sibuma, Elliott Sinnwell, Jeremiah Chapman and Dylan Koresh placed second to Oelwein with a time of 35.67 seconds.

Sibuma also placed fifth in the 55 hurdles.

Charles City junior Whitney Martin, who is a multiple state-qualifier in both cross-country and track and field, placed second in the 3,000 run (11:07.74) to Crestwood sophomore Cassidy Ihns (10:58.74).

Comet freshman Kiki Connell, who is a State Cross Country medalists and holds several Charles City Middle School long-distance records — some formerly held by Martin — proved she can be a factor in the field events as she placed third in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 4 inches.

Connell was also the anchor leg of Charles City 1,600 distance medley with Alex Litterer, Sadie Ruzicka and Sami Heyer, which placed third (4:49.20) behind winner Decorah and runner-up Crestwood.

There were no team scores tabulated for the NEIC Indoor Meet.
