CHARLES CITY — Whenever political candidates curry favor with the populous, it sometimes prompts the chant “four more years”.

Charles City senior Elliott Gebel has put himself in the position where he can possibly play pay-per-attendance football for four more years.

“It’s always great for the program when one of your players continues to play in college,” Charles City head football coach Darren Bohlen said shortly after Gebel signed his letter of intent to continue his career at Upper Iowa University on Friday.

“He put in four years of hard work here, and it has paid off,” Comet assistant coach Bob Kloberdanz added.

The Sunday before his signing, Gebel finally decided the play for the Peacocks, a NCAA Division II program in Fayette after considering other schools.

“It was the best fit for me scholastically,” said Gebel, who will major in business. “I also like the way they schedule their semesters … it works better for me.”

Gebel, a defensive lineman, was also influenced by the opportunity to work with the Peacock’s defensive coordinator, Justin Wyatt, who distinguished himself as a All-Big 12 first-teamer during his career at Missouri University.

Last year, Upper Iowa finished with a 6-5 record.
