CHARLES CITY — It was a day of firsts for several Comet tennis players during their home match against Oelwein, Tuesday at Sportsmen’s Park.

Charles City junior Jacie Wink earned her first varsity singles win when she defeated Morgan Vawter in a pro-set score of 8-2 in No. 6 singles; and Jodie Sindlinger, another Comet junior, battled back from a 2-4 deficit to defeat Oelwein senior Megan Rex, 8-5.

That wasn’t Sindlinger’s first varsity singles win, but it was her first victory at No. 1.

“Jodie was able to make some adjustments and pull it out,” said Charles City head coach Brian Parrott, whose team swept the Huskies 9-0 while improving to 2-2 for the season.

“It was a good team win,” Parrott said. “The girls are playing with more confidence and they’re anticipating opponents’ shots much better.”

Other singles varsity winners for Charles City included Amy Boggess, who defeated Hannah Sandhagen, 8-1, at No. 2; senior Mackenzie Wilson, who swept Meran Baerg, 8-0, at No. 3; junior Taylor Walters, who defeated Taylor Gish, 8-4, at No. 4; and freshman Kayla Kellogg, who defeated Mahayla Harrison, 8-5, at No. 5.

The Comets had already taken a 3-0 lead before the singles matches after sweeping Oelwein in doubles.

Sindlinger and Boggess defeated Rex and Harrison, 8-1, in No. 1 doubles; Walters and Wilson defeated Sandhagen and Vawter, 8-3, in No. 2 doubles; and Kellogg and Wink defeated Baerg and Gish, 8-3, in No. 3 doubles.

Charles City also won all six of the junior varsity matches with Joslyn Cotton, Brooke Vance, Cassie Debower and Lauren Connell winning their singles matches, and the team tandems of Cotton-Vance and Connell-Debower winning their doubles matches.

“Our junior varsity girls have been doing great this season,” Parrott said. “We have a lot of young talent, especially our freshmen.”

For the second straight day, the Comet tennis team was in action despite most other varsity sports being cancelled or postponed during the week.

Tuesday’s match against Oelwein was not as brutal as Monday’s wind-chilled match on the road against Waverly-Shell Rock.

But despite the sun being out on Tuesday, it wasn’t warm enough to melt all the ice and snow on the court. Parrott credits the volunteer work of several of the Comets’ parents who came out to Sportsmen’s Park in the morning to help clear the court.
