Former Comet star Forsyth now Wartburg’s all-time home run leader

Press Staff Report

WAVERLY — There are Knights and there are Kings.

Charles City graduate Mara Forsyth is now the Wartburg Knights home run King (or rather Queen).

In the second game of Wartburg’s Saturday doubleheader loss to Central College, Forsyth hit a 3-run homer giving the senior 30 for her career, breaking the all-time mark of 29 set by Ashley Rogers in 2009.

Then in a home doubleheader win against Dubuque on Sunday, Forsyth homered in both games leading the Knights to 4-3 and 3-0 wins.

Forsyth, who hit a school-record 14 homers last season, has eight this season as she leads the Knights (13-14) in that category as well as in RBIs (25).

Among the Knights with more than one at-bat this season, Forsyth is leading with a .420 batting average and a .802 slugging percentage.

Second on Wartburg in home runs (4) and RBIs (18) is freshman Sara Martin, who was the cleanup hitter for the Comets’ state tournament softball teams in 2016 and 2017.

As for Forsyth’s softball career at Charles City, she earned the rare distinction among high school athletes of being named all-state five times in one sport. She was also a member of the Comets’ state championship volleyball team in 2013, and served as class president her senior year.
