CHARLES CITY — Though the favorable forecast for Monday proved to be spot-on, it didn’t guarantee that Charles City’s boys and girls golf teams were finally going to host their belated home-openers.

The large snow-base from yet another spring blizzard seemed likely to leave Cedar Ridge Golf Course puddle unwonderful.

Fortunately, the snow-base — unlike most winter snow-bases — didn’t have a layer of ice on the bottom, thus the ground was able to absorb the melting snow instead of having it run off to form additional water hazards.

But even though the snow melted away, the trees from the well-wooded course didn’t as many players from the co-ed meet that included Nashua-Plainfield and Osage found them on their drives and even approach shots.

Nonetheless, the Comet boys team — playing for the first time outdoors, including practice — defeated Osage by 2 strokes (188-190) to win the boys varsity meet.

Nashua-Plainfield shot 210 as a team for third place.

The overall top scorer for the day was Comet junior Colton Slinger, who shot a 9-hole score of 43.

“And we had him on jayvee,” said Charles City boys head coach Dave Williams, who also had sophomore Atticus Parrott on jayvee where he carded the second-best score of the meet (44).

“We’ve got some depth this season,” said Williams, whose junior varsity team — which included scores from Cade Schmidt (46) and Jackson Friedrich (49) — would have won the varsity meet with a team score of 182.

As for the top boys varsity scores, Comet senior Carter Klatt and Osage senior Isaac Oberfoell tied for medalist honors with 45s, just ahead of local basketball standouts Drew Olson of Osage and Jack Molstead of Charles City, who shot 46 and 47, respectively.

Charles City seniors Theo Arndt and Noah Schlader each shot 48s to round out the Comet varsity scorers.

In the girls triangular meet, Nashua-Plainfield senior Megan Cerwinske shot a medalist score of 54 with teammate Nicole Harrington scoring a 58 for individual medalist honors to lead the Lady Huskies to a 2-stroke win over Charles City (240-242) for top team honors.

Emma Williams, Kara Hoffman and Hope Slinger all carded 59s for the Comets.

Osage, who was led by Macy Ott who also scored a 59, had a 245 third-place score.

The Comet girls will host Crestwood and Turkey Valley, Tuesday (April 24) at Cedar Ridge; the CC boys will take on Crestwood and Oelwein in Oelwein on Tuesday.
