Practice? Who needs practice? Or even ample time outdoors on the course?

Despite spending most of the preseason and month indoors hitting in the old Comet Gym into a curtain shielding the antiquated “Black Whole” student section, the Charles City boys golf team is playing like it just got back from an extended Florida Spring Break golfing tour.

After winning their first two triangulars of the season, the Comets shot an 18-hole team score of 331 to win the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational while besting runner-up New Hampton by 2 strokes, Wednesday at Waverly Golf and Country Club.

The Comets’ score nearly matched the team’s low from last season (330) when it placed second at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet to hosting New Hampton.

Comet senior Carter Klatt shot a career-low 79, which tied him with New Hampton’s Ryan Anderson for individual runner-up honors.

North Fayette Valley’s Colin Gavin was the medalist after carding a 76.

Only one time last year did a Comet shoot an 18-hole score in the 70s — Theo Arndt who placed third at the aformentioned NEIC tourney with a 77.

Arndt almost got there again with an 80 score that placed him fourth among individuals.

Seniors Carter Johanningmeier and Jackson Molstead both carded Top 10 scores of 86 to round out Charles City’s scoring.

In a meet that had plenty of triple-digit scorers, Charles City had six golfers finish under 100 — Noah Schlader (89), Atticus Parrott (89), Colton Slinger (92), Jackson Friedrich (93), Cade Schmidt (95) and Skylar Houdek (98).

Rounding out the team scores were Waverly-Shell Rock (353), North Fayette Valley (363), Jessup (365), Waverly-Shell Rock JV (374) and Charles City JV (375).
