HAMPTON — A lot can happen on the back nine … or the second nine.

Like you can go in being tied with an opponent atop the leaderboard, and come out 19 strokes ahead.

At the Hampton-Dumont Invitational held Saturday at Hampton Golf and Country Club, the defending champion Charles City Comets were even with last year’s runner-up Iowa Falls-Alden after the first circuit on the nine-hole course.

It looked as if this one was going to wire, too, as last year’s meet was decided by 1 stroke.

But a strong, second-time-around surge by the Comets provided little drama and even less doubt about who would be on top when all the scores were tabulated.

For the second time in as many days, Charles City recorded an 18-hole team score under 340 while distancing themselves from the Cadets (339-358) for their second-straight invite title.

“Our guys are playing well,” Charles City head coach Dave Williams said. “We were tied at the turn then nearly won by 20 … we’re playing well right now.”

During last year’s win, then Comet junior Carter Klatt had a breakout performance when he shot what was then a career 18-hole low 87 for individual runner-up honors.

Now that seems eons ago as Klatt again attained a personal 18-hole low — 10 strokes off from last year with a 77.

Klatt now has two 18-hole scores under 80 in four 18-hole meets this season. The 77 is the lowest 18-hole score shot by a Comet since Theo Arndt carded a 77 for third-place honors at last year’s Northeast Iowa Conference Meet.

Though Klatt’s score was impressive, he again had to settle for individual runner-up honors. Jackson French from Iowa Falls-Alden also shot a 77 and received medalist honors due to a card-back ruling.

Arndt carded an 84, which tied him for fourth among individuals with IFA’s RJ Ford; and Noah Schlader and Colton Slinger tied for fifth with 89s to round out the scoring for Charles City.

The day before while hosting Waukon at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, Charles City defeated the Indians, 337-373.

Slinger was the medalist with an 18-hole score of 82; and Arndt, Klatt and Schlader all shot 85s to round out the scoring.
