DECORAH — “Over? … Nothing is over until we decide it is!”

The famous and inspiring line from John Belushi’s “Bluto” Blutarsky character in “Animal House” would likely be out of place during the Class 1A-Region 4 girls tennis tournament.

In the first round on Saturday morning, Charles City faced hosting Decorah and lost, 5-0.

“Once a team reaches five wins, all other play is stopped,” Charles City coach Brian Parrott said.

The Vikings won No. 1 (Carina Yee over Jodie Sindlinger), No. 3 (Mara Frieden over Taylor Walters), No. 4 (Alli Groux over Kayla Kellogg), No. 5 (Mya Herrman over Mackenzie Wilson) and No. 6 (Soleil Smith over Joclyn Cotton) singles in straight sets.

Comet junior Amy Boggess was playing Vita Domnenko in No. 2 singles before play was stopped.

None of the doubles matches were played.

The Vikings advanced to the second round, and lost 5-1 to Dubuque Wahlert, which will play No. 1-seed Waverly-Shell Rock today at W-SR in the tourney semifinals.

The regional finals will be held May 21 in Independence.

Though the Comets lost in the first round, the season still isn’t “over” for several of their players.

On Wednesday at the Class 1A-Region 4 Singles and Doubles Tournament in Decorah, Sindlinger and Cotton will play in the singles bracket, and the tandems of Boggess and Kellogg, and Walters and Wilson will play in the doubles bracket.
