DES MOINES — Charles City senior Sadie Ruzicka, who has qualified for the State Track Championships in multiple events since her freshman year, attained a personal-best time of 16.24 seconds in Friday’s preliminary rounds of the Class 3A girls 100-meter hurdles.

It was the fastest 100 hurdle time from a Comet girls since Jenni Domino was clocked at 15.24 in 2007.

Though Ruzicka’s effort was more than .4 of a second better than her previous PR set during the state qualifier, it wasn’t enough to advance her to the finals on Saturday.

On Thursday, Ruzicka was part of the Comets’ state-qualifying 4-by-100 shuttle hurdle relay team that didn’t advance due to a disqualification in the preliminaries.

Last year, Ruzicka helped set a school record in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Comet freshman Kiki Connell recorded a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 5.21 seconds in the 1500-meter run on Saturday. It was good enough for 18th place.

On Thursday, Connell ran the 3000 — the event she qualified for the Drake Relays in — and placed 12th.

Winner of both the Class 3A 3000 and 1500 runs was Crestwood standout Ellie Friesen, who won both races at the Drake Relays.

In the Class 3A girls discus, Comet senior Sydney Loeckle placed 12th with a throw of 114 feet, 11 inches. It was Loeckle’s second state appearance in the event.

North Butler’s Nicole Heeren, who was the Class 1A champion in the discus last year, placed 12th in her division on Friday with a throw of 112 feet, 7 inches.

Heeren had also qualified in the shot put — an event she placed second last year — and placed 10th with a throw of 36 feet, 2 3/4 inches.

Competing on Friday were Nashua-Plainfield’s 1600 distance medley (Britney Holthaus, Brianna Bienemann, Kaylee Cerwinske and Chloe Matthews) and 4-by-800 (Isacc Chambers, Dayton Hansen, Ike Sinnwell and Luke Cerwinske), which placed 21st in Class 1A girls and 22nd in Class 1A boys, respectively.

Hansen also placed 21st in the 1600-meter run.

Rockfords’ four-time state qualifier Sheridan LaCoste placed 23rd in the Class 1A girls 1500 run.
