CHARLES CITY — With a 12-0 victory over Turkey Valley that was stopped short of three full innings Wednesday night at Sportsmen’s Park, the Charles City Comets softball team improved to 3-0 with its third one-sided victory in as many days.

The Comets have scored 41 runs in just a grand total of 12 innings at bat when you minus the outs left when the games were stopped.

Comet sophomore Alex Litterer got the start for Charles City, and yielded just one hit while striking out five in three innings.

Resident ace Sami Heyer, who was the winning pitcher in Charles City’s 11-1 victory over North Butler on Tuesday, got the night off — sort of.

Hitting for Litterer, Heyer clubbed a 3-run home run which spearheaded a 5-run rally in the first inning.

Heyer’s blast withstanding, it wasn’t just a matter of the Comets hitting the cover off the ball but more of their aggressive base-running that at times seemed to addle the Trojans.

The Comets were also patient at the plate as they drew seven walks.

After scoring 5 runs in the first and 3 more in the second, Charles City ended the game in the third with a 4-run rally that didn’t include a hit.

Charles City went into the game as the overwhelming favorites, facing a team that won only two games last season and was playing its season-opener in Charles City after field conditions at the Trojans’ home field force the game to be relocated.

But the Comets are due for much tougher challenges before their rather busy opening week comes to a close before the Memorial Day Weekend.

On Thursday, Charles City will host a Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader against Crestwood, which is ranked No. 10 in Class 3A according to the first Iowa Girls High School Softball Rankings of the season released this week by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Then on Friday, Charles City will host Independence, which is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A.

As for the Comets … they’re ranked No. 2 in Class 4A behind defending champion Winterset.

After Memorial Day, Charles City will host NEIC foe Waverly-Shell Rock (No. 15-ranked in 4A) with a doubleheader on Tuesday.
