CHARLES CITY — Sometimes simple questions beckon simple answers.

When a sports writer asked “Wee Willie” Keeler the secret of his success with the bat, the future hall-of-famer replied, “I just hit them where they ain’t.”

In an Thursday afternoon non-conference game against Mason City, the hosting Charles City Comets managed to hit the ball hard on repeated occasions and for the most part put the ball in play as they only struck out four times in seven innings.

But some of the Comets’ hardest hit balls had no eyes for the gaps and were right at the Mohawks, who won 5-1.

Mason City starter Derek Dalen pitched five scoreless innings before being relieved by Josh Smith.

Dawson Wedeking had two doubles and an RBI for the Mohawks, who improved to 4-6 overall.

Theo Arndt and Elliott Sinwell each had two hits, and Jace Cajthami had an RBI double for the Comets, who fell to 3-4 overall.

Both teams had eight hits, but the Mohawks took advantage of a couple of Comet errors as only 2 of the 5 runs scored off Charles City starter Cater Johanningmeier were earned.

Mason City also gained from its pain as two of their three hit batsmen eventually scored runs.

Dylan Salinas pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Charles City, which will host Dike-New Hartford on Friday before taking on Kee of Lansing and Saint Ansgar during Saturday’s baseball tournament at Sportsmen’s Park.
