Press Staff Report

CHARLES CITY — Brian Bohlen, head coach for the state-bound Charles City Comets softball team, has been named District Coach of the Year by the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association.

Bohlen and the Comets are competing in the Class 4A bracket of the State Softball Championships this week. It is the third-straight appearance for the Bohlen-led Comets, who placed fourth in 2017 and fifth in 2016 in the previous two state tournaments.

Charles City is currently 33-6 and is the No. 2-seed in the bracket. For two straight weeks, the Comets were ranked No. 1 in class 4A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union before finishing the regular season with a No. 4-ranking.

Bohlen is the third Charles City coach to receive District Coach of the Year honors during the 2017-18 school year. The others include Bohlen’s father, Doug Bohlen, who was honored after leading the Comet boys and girls bowling teams to Class 1A runner-up finishes at the State Bowling Championships; and Comet boys basketball coach Ben Klapperich.

Bohlen’s award is due to be presented during the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association All-Star Series, July 23 at Waukee High School.
