CHARLES CITY — Now that we’re nearly through July, people are already starting to count the days to Christmas.

By the way, you can also count the days to football season — almost on one hand.

Either way for both seasons it’s often if not sometimes better to give than to take away.

To clarify for football, we’re not talking about turnovers, yardage or points on the scoreboard. We’re talking about conundrums quarterbacks might face while running the triple-option.

“When in doubt, it’s better to give it than to pull it,” Charles City High School assistant coach Andrew Christensen explained to an aspiring QB of when the fullback should or shouldn’t get the ball. “I’m not going to yell if you give it as we still can get a couple of yards. But if you pull it and we lose five, we’ve got a problem.”

Christensen and other Charles City football and athletic coaches as well as several former Comet players make up the staff for the annual Northeast Iowa Football Camp, which is running this week through Thursday at the CCHS practice fields. From the number of participants present during the camp’s opening day on Monday, the turnout for the non-contact camp for incoming grades 5-12 appears greater from last year.

The camp traditionally precedes the opening week of official high school football practices.

During this week, campers will be instructed in both offensive and defensive fundamentals and will participate in competitive drills.

They will also be introduced, or reinforced, to the triple-option the Comets installed last season while returning to more of a ground-oriented offensive attack.
