Press Staff Report

The Northeast Iowa Conference named its all-conference volleyball teams early this week, and three Charles City players were honored.

They included Jodie Sindlinger, Sami Heyer and Sam Alinea — all seniors.

Sindlinger was named to the first team after earning second-team distinction last season — there were no repeat first-teamers as the 2017 All-NEIC first team consisted entirely of seniors.

As a 5-foot-10 middle hitter, Sindlinger led the 14-28 Comets in kills (266) and successful serves (272). Sindlinger had 66 total blocks, which tied her for team lead with sophomore Danielle Stock. Her 23 aces tied her with Heyer for team lead in that category.

With 104 sets, Sindlinger match Heyer and Stock for team lead.

Outside hitter Heyer, who was an honorable mention selection last year, was named to the second team this past season. In addition to sharing the team lead with Sindlinger in aces, Heyer led the Comets in digs (247) and was second on the team in kills (211).

After playing her first season as a starter, defensive specialist Alinea was named to the All-NEIC honorable mention squad.

Alinea was second on the team with successful serves (253), getting in more than 95 percent of her attempts while recording 20 aces.

Alinea was third on the team in digs (213).

Conference champion Waverly-Shell Rock was the most represented among the All-NEIC selections. Go-Hawk senior Jessica Jacobs, and juniors Jaz Westmoreland and Britney Young were all named to the first team; senior Laura Bates and junior Maddie Rodenbeck were named to the second team; and senior Katelyn Fincher was named honorable mention.

New Hampton, which is playing in the Volleyball State Championship in the Class 3A bracket with a Wednesday night first-round match against Tipton, had five players named to All-NEIC teams. They included first-teamers Lauren Frerich (Sr.) and Rachel Rinken (Jr.); second-teamers Maddi Moorman (Sr.) Natalie Hoey (Jr.); and junior Ashlynn Tank, who was named honorable mention.

There were no freshmen name to any of the All-NEIC teams.

Decorah’s honorable mention outside hitter Avery Shelton was the only sophomore in the overall list.
