CHARLES CITY — There were several reasons why the annual Logan Luft Memorial Wrestling Tournament drew more than 200 competitors last season — an event record — and lasted from morning to afternoon to evening.

One was the inclusion of grade 7 and 8 wrestlers.

Another was the tournament’s new name.

Originally called the Charles City Mat Club Wrestling Tournament, the club decided to rechristen the tournament to honor one of its former members.

Luft was a talented multi-sport junior high athlete who was about to enter high school before an ATV accident ended his life on July 4, 2017.

Though a record-setting cross country and track athlete for Charles City Middle School, Luft excelled the most at wrestling and he was active in the sport in more ways than just being a competitor.

Before the tournament was named in his honor, Luft served as a volunteer referee during the event.

Other Charles City student-athletes will also likely serve in the same capacity during this year’s tournament, Saturday in Comet Gym.

Weigh-ins are at 7 a.m. — wrestling will tentatively start at 8 a.m.

Wrestlers from kindergarten to grade 8 will participate.
