CHARLES CITY — We’ve all heard the term “Shooting the lights out.”

But how ‘bout “Blocking the lights out”?

That’s what Charles City 6-foot-7 junior Bradley Andrews appeared to do while recording his fifth of what would be seven blocks during the Comets’ boys basketball season-opener against Aplington-Parkersburg on Thursday.

Apparently, Comet Gym’s light-timer that turns off lights in the gym during inactive evenings wasn’t deactivated as the place went dark right after Andrews’s swat.

But really, Andrews blocks turned on the Comets’ lights early in the game after the Falcons took a 9-2 lead. All four of his first-quarter rejections sparked nifty open-court finishes by senior all-state guard Jack Molstead, helping Charles City overcome the deficit on way to winning, 70-66.

Molstead led all scorers with 26 points, and Andrews scored 18 — including a 3-pointer to show his range — as the Comets won their belated season-opener after Tuesday’s road game against Dike-New Hartford was postponed due to lack of practice time for the home team.

Taking the lead for good early in the second quarter, the Comets led throughout the game with with leads as large as 10 points. But when Falcon senior Junior Bodden completed a 3-point play with less than a minute in regulation, AP pulled within 1 (62-61).

On the ensuing Charles City possession, Comet junior Marcus Cranshaw was immediately fouled but converted on both ends of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity (Cranshaw, who scored 9 points, was 4 of 4 at the line during the final two minutes).

Then after a Falcon miss, Molstead retrieved the rebound a drove the length of the floor for a layup and the foul — which he made — to give Charles City a 67-61 lead.

Bodden led the Falcons with 17 points with senior teammate Aaron Bartels adding 16, including three 3-pointers.

* In the girls game, Aplington-Parkersburg rolled to a 65-25 victory behind junior guard Sophia Jungling’s game-high 14 points.

For Charles City (0-2), it was led by senior Jodie Sindlinger’s 10 points.

Both Comet teams will be back in action on Saturday when they host Algona in an afternoon varsity doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
