HUDSON — With Class 1A No. 1-ranked Don Bosco part of the 10-team field, the Hudson Wrestling Invitational held Saturday was for the most part a race for second place.

And it was a race that the Charles City Comets won as they placed five wrestlers in championship matches and had five others wrestle in the consolation championships.

When all the scores were tabulated, the Comets finished with 163 points, well ahead of third-place finisher North Fayette Valley.

Don Bosco, with nine champions, finished well ahead of everyone with 285 points.

Charles City senior Dylan Koresh, a returning a state podium placer, denied the Dons of a would-be 10th tourney title when he won a 3-0 decision over Cael Rahnavardi.

The Comets almost took another title away from Don Bosco in the 152-pound bracket. Charles City junior Carter Proffitt battled Don Bosco’s Cade Tenold to a 5-5 tie after three periods, before Tenold was able to score a two-legged takedown for the sudden victory.

After Don Bosco’s Daniel Kimball claimed the Dons’ first title of the day by recording a technical fall over Nashua-Plainfield’s Trey Nelson in the 120-pound championship, Michael McClelland made it two in a row for the Dons when he decisioned (11-6) Charles City sophomore Alec Staudt in the 126-pound championship bout.

Comet junior Elliott Sinnwell made it to the 160-pound championship match, where he lost a 9-3 decision to Don Bosco’s Carson Tenold.

In the 182-pound championship match, Charles City junior Jack Sindlinger faced fellow returning state podium placer Thomas Even of Don Bosco. For a moment, it appeared that Sindlinger was on the verge of recording a near-fall or even sticking Even, who is ranked No. 2 in Class 1A according to the latest IAwrestle rankings. But Even was able to turn the tables and record a fall victory midway through the second period.

Nashua-Plainfield, which finished sixth at the invite, boasted a champion in junior Jakob Whitinger, who was down 10-2 during his 113-pound championship bout against Sigourney-Keota’s Mason Dye before rallying to win a 15-11 decision.

Meanwhile at the Independence JV and Girls Tournament, Charles City boasted five champions with Marley Hagarty, Emma Grimm, Allie Cross, Cesar Gonzalez and Caden Collins all winning their brackets.
