Carter Proffitt wins lone NEIC Wrestling title for Comets

CHARLES CITY — It’s one thing to have a leg up on the competition.
But the repeated predicament Charles City junior Carter Proffitt found himself in against Waverly-Shell Rock senior Bryson Hervol during the 152-pound championship match at the Northeast Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament, Saturday at Comet Gym was entirely different.
On numerous occasions, Hervol was able to get a firm grasp on Proffitt’s left leg while the two wrestlers were in the stand-up position.
Somehow, Proffitt managed to avoid a takedown during one of those instances. Nonetheless, he found himself trailing Hervol 6-5 late in the third period.
Finally, Proffitt made his move and recorded a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining and then managed to ride Hervol out for the remainder of the match for the 7-6 title win.
It proved to be Charles City’s lone championship.
Returning state podium placer Dylan Koresh made it to the 170-pound finals before running into nemesis Colter Bye of Crestwood. Ranked No. 2 in among Class 2A 170-pounders according to IAwrestle, Bye was able to grind out a 4-0 decision over Koresh for the title.
Out of Koresh’s seven losses this year — paired with 28 wins — three of them have been against Bye.
Comet sophomore Roush Jaeger recorded several upset victories on way to making it to the 145-pound final. New Hampton/Turkey Valley senior Max Babcock ended Jaeger’s run by pinning him with 11 seconds remaining in the second period.
Though their run of 13 straight NEIC titles was stopped last season by NH/TV, the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks returned to the top perch in resounding fashion with a first-place total of 255 team points. Crestwood was a distant second with 199.5 team points followed by NH/TV (180), Decorah (148), Charles City (134), Oelwein (97) and Waukon (37.5).
The Go-Hawks were represented in most of the final bouts which prompted the meet announcer to suggest that Waverly-Shell Rock should line up on one side of the mat when the finalists are announced.
The No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A — all other NEIC school are Class 2A — W-SR boasted seven champions: Aiden Riggins (106), Bailey Roybal (113), Dylan Albrecht (126), Ian Heise (138), Jacob Herrmann (160), Brayden Wolf (195) and Andrew Snyder (285).
