Comet jayvee bowlers set team records

CHARLES CITY — This season high school bowling rules allow for game-by-game substitutions during the Baker Rotation.

The Charles City Comets frequently take advantage of this while rewarding upstart junior varsity bowlers a chance to break into the varsity lineup.

But during Friday’s home meet against Forest City at Comet Bowl, you almost didn’t want to breakup the Comets’ junior varsity boys lineup.

In their jayvee match against the Indians, Charles City’s reserves averaged just under 199 during the Baker Rotation.

Earlier, Nicholas Roney bowled a two-game series of 492 (258, 234), which is the second highest series recorded by a Comet this season and the highest jayvee series in school history.

As for the second-highest Comet jayvee series … that goes to Koyer Kellogg, who rolled a 470 (257, 213) the same night.

The Comet jayvee boys had a team score of 2,883 — another school jayvee record — and were only bested by the Comet varsity boys that night by 9 pins

Charles City’s varsity was led by Cade Schmidt’s 447 series. Cael Bohlen rolled a career-high 445 series, and Nathan Schultz had a 432 series for the Comets (5-2), who — though they only bested the jayvee by 9 pins — bested the varsity Indians by 542 pins.

Charles City varsity girls improved their undefeated record to 7-0 with a 2,636-2,259 victory over Forest City.

Comet senior Madison Ross was her usual self with a girls varsity-leading 420 series.

The Comets will be back in action on Tuesday for a makeup away meet against Tripoli.
