The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the Class 4A and 5A regional girls basketball pairings on Thursday.

Assigned to the Class 4A-Region 4 bracket, Charles City will host Waterloo East at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 — a Wednesday — in the first round.

The Comets (0-15) were due to play the Trojans (2-12) in Waterloo on Monday for a non-conference regular-season game, which was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Charles City also had Thursday’s non-conference game against Algona canceled due to inclement weather.

Due to the rash of postponements this winter, the IGHSAU as well as the Iowa High School Athletic Association have allowed teams to reschedule games even after their respective regional, district or substate tournaments start. But that only applies when both competing teams have first-round byes and have yet to play a postseason game.

The Comets are still looking for their first win of the season, though they are coming off one of the best games of the year as they led Oelwein late into last Friday’s home game before the Huskies finally put them away with some clutch free-throw shooting at the end of a 35-31 final.

The winner of the Waterloo East-at-Charles City game will face Waverly-Shell Rock in Waverly at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 — a Saturday — in the semifinals.

The Go-Hawks are ranked No. 5 in Class 4A according to the latest IGHSAU rankings. They have previously beaten the Comets this season and are due to play them again on Feb. 5 in Charles City to complete the regular-season series.

The other ranked team in the Class 4A-Region 4 bracket is Ballard (No. 11), who also has received a bye and will play the winner of the Newton-at-Bondurant-Farrar first-round game on Feb. 16.

The championship game for the bracket will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 hosted by the highest remaining seeded team.

As part of the Class 1A-Region 2 bracket, Nashua-Plainfield will take on North Butler in Greene in the first round at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 — a Thursday.

Winner will advance to play Tripoli in Tripoli, 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the quarterfinals.

Also in the bracket is Rockford who will host Riceville at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in the first round.

Winner will advance to play Clarksville in Clarksville, 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the quarterfinals.

The regional championship for the bracket will be 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at West Union.
