CHARLES CITY — One thing that often applies with the postseason — you can throw the regular-season records out the window.

The Charles City Comets girls basketball team finished the regular season winless for the second year in the row, but still it had a 0-0 postseason mark going into Wednesday’s Class 4A-Region 4 first-round game against Waterloo East.

Early on, the Comets matched the Trojans bucket-for-bucket and even took a 10-9 lead after the first quarter. But a pair of 3-point baskets on consecutive Trojan possessions by Kerris Roberts and Amanee Clark in order gave Waterloo East some double-digit distance (25-14) before running away with it spurred by open-court finishers on way to a 68-49 regional win.

Roberts had a game-high 26 points and Clark added 15 for the Trojans, who advance to play Waverly-Shell Rock in Waverly in the semifinals, 7 p.m. Saturday.

Playing her final basketball game as a Comet, senior Jodie Sindlinger led her team with 14 points. Likely not playing her last game for Charles City was Lydia Staudt, who had 13 points including a pair of 3-pointers.

The Comets also got 8 points from Ashlyn Hoeft, and 6 by Liz Fiser — also due to be returning letterwinners.

The 49 points scored by the Comets matched their season-high recorded Friday in their regular-season finale against Decorah.
