WATERLOO — Every pin counts.

The cliche fits right in with “every yard counts” and “every push-up counts”.

But in bowling, every pin does count. And when they counted all the pins at the end of the Class 1A State Bowling Championships, Monday at Cadillac Xtreme Bowling Center, the Charles City girls team had just enough to take home its third trophy in as many tournaments.

With a team scored of 2,615, the Comets were able to seize the third-place spot from Dubuque Wahlert just five pins behind.

“The girls hung in there,” Charles City head coach Doug Bohlen said. “They were cheering each other on until the end, and we get to bring home another trophy.”

Last year, the Comet girls placed second to follow-up another third-place showing in 2017.

Senior Madison Ross paced the Comets with a two-game series of 415, which placed her sixth among the individual medalists.

Junior Sarah Mitchell had the next-best two-game series (350) for the Comet girls, who — in addition to being conference and qualifying tournament champions — were undefeated in dual-meet play this past season.

“We had a solid season,” Bohlen said. “You can’t complain when you make it down to state.”

Louisa-Muscatine “three-peated” as Class 1A girls champions as the Falcons held off runner-up Camanche by a mark (2,947-2,915).

L-M junior Whittney Morse won her second-straight girls title with a 472 series — just 2 pins better than runner-up teammate Lauren Bodman, who took a perfect game into the 10th frame of her second game only to come up a little high on her 11th attempt while leaving the 6 and 10 pins.

Nonetheless, it just was a banner day for the Falcons as they actually did leave Waterloo after achieving perfection.

Bowling as an individual in the Class 1A boys tournament, Falcon junior Dustin Beaham rolled a 300 in the first game of a 535 two-game series while leading all the boy medalists

Charles City junior Nathan Schultz was among the individual boy medalists as his 441 series placed him fifth.

The Comets also got a 396 series from junior Nicholas Roney, whom Schultz helped find a line in the first game for a 225 score; and a 381 series from freshman Cael Bohlen. But unlike the girls, the Comet boys — who also placed second last year — couldn’t bring home another trophy after finishing fifth.

“We just couldn’t string enough strikes together,” said Bohlen, who is the grandfather of Cael. “We also missed too many 1-pin spares.”

Red Oak was the boys champion with a total pinfall of 3,135 followed by runner-up Camanche (3,098) and third-place finisher Durant (2,993).

Central DeWitt, whom the Comets shared the same pair of lanes, placed fourth (2,965) ahead of the Comets (2,879).

“I believe our guy are going to work hard to get back down here with the goal of winning the whole thing,” Bohlen said. “We got our whole starting lineup coming back.”
