CHARLES CITY — Ever hear of the poker player who said he didn’t lose?
He just ran out of money.
You can’t blame Charles City senior Ethan Peterson for making the same type of claim after dropping a disputed 7-6 decision to West Delaware’s Sawyer Falck in the 220-pound bout of the Comets’ season- and home-opening wrestling dual against the Hawks in the old Charles City High School gym on Thursday night.
He may have just ran out of time.
Peterson was down 7-4 with short time running down in the third period. Just when Falck seemed about ready to seal the victory, Peterson recorded a takedown and had Falck in back-point position just as time expired.
At first it looked like Peterson got the 2-point TD and the 2-point near-fall as the scoreboard momentarily showed him winning 8-7. But the referee clarified that he didn’t award any back-points granting Falck the 1-point victory.
West Delaware won the meet 48-18 while winning seven of the 11 matches wrestled — the Hawks were awarded forfeit victories in the 126- and 132-pound classes. The 106-pound match was a double-forfeit.
Three of Charles City’s returning district qualifiers won their matches.
In the 182-pound bout, Comet senior Kayden Blunt pinned Jeryn Funke 3:30 into their match.
Earlier, Comet senior Nathan Lopez earned a 9-4 decision over Blake Mather in the 145-pound bout.
In the following 152-pound match, Comet junior Talan Weber bested Hawk freshman Jack Cantwell with a 6-2 decision win.
Charles City sophomore Carter Haberkorn started the evening on a high note for the Comets when he pinned WD freshman Travyn Sullivan 1:49 into their 113-pound bout.
Six of West Delaware’s wins were by fall with Brayden Maury stopping Jordan Young 1:02 into their 120-pound match, Carson Turnis pinning Dylan LaPolice 1:32 into their 138-pound match, Brent Yonkovic pinning Colton Anderegg 36 seconds into their 160-pound match, Garrison Gullihan pinning Carter Burkhard 2:18 into their 170-pound match, Will Ward stopping Trevor Peterson 1:44 into their 195-pound bout, and Cameron Geuther getting the slap as time expired in the first period of his heavyweight match against Comet sophomore Dantrell Baker.
