Firefighters responded to a home fire on a chilly Thursday afternoon and managed to keep the flames from spreading much beyond the kitchen.
“Luckily someone was home to catch it, or the whole thing could have gone up,” said Assistant Fire Chief Marty Parcher.
There were several people home at the time the fire started, but there were no injuries reported.
The fire likely started in a ceiling fan in the kitchen, Parcher said. Firefighters had to open two walls to fight the flames, and most of the fire damage was contained to that area.
Firefighters were on the scene for almost two hours. Once the fire was out the home was ventilated to remove smoke from the upstairs so firefighters could more easily check to make sure that had found any hot spots, Parcher said.
“We don’t want to have to come back,” he added.
Parcher said Floyd County Search and Rescue was called to the scene because they have extra air tanks and extra equipment that could be useful if needed.
Charles City Fire Chief Eric Whipple said the search and rescue squad is called anytime there is a structure fire.
Whipple also said the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene to provide extra manpower.
