Chili cook-off brightens winter days

After that darn groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter, no one can blame Midwesterners for seeking something to warm the spirit.
In Charles City, those mid-winter blues were interrupted Friday by the 22nd annual Chili Cook-Off.
A full house packed the Knights of Columbus building on Clark Street, tasting seven different chili recipes from community members, and a variety of desserts from the Charles City High School’s Comet Cafe class.
All those who sampled the chili were allowed to vote for their favorite from among the seven — with the winner awarded the 2018 Golden Ladle.
Every year the event attracts between 120 to 200 chili enthusiasts from the community, said Mark Wicks, director of the Charles City Chamber of Commerce.
“The funds benefit Community Revitalization, but the goal is to break up the winter months with a fun event,” Wicks said.
