MASON CITY — The Charles City Comets came out the locker room and played a much more competitive second half compared to the first in their Class 4A-Region 2 quarterfinal game against hosting Mason City on Wednesday.
But the Mohawks were already well on their way to the semifinal round before eventually advancing by way of a 54-37 final.
Mason City (8-12) took control early while jumping out to a 16-2 lead through one quarter. Their trapping defense made it difficult for Charles City to get a clear shot at the basket in the early going.
And on offense, the Mohawks effectively moved the ball inside and out, and along the perimeter before repeatedly finding open shooters spotting up beyond the arc as the team connected for nine 3-pointers.
Junior Jada Williams led the Mohawks with 14 points, and Reggi Spotts added 12 which included three 3-point field goals for Mason City, which will play the bracket’s top seed Ballard (19-1), Saturday in the semifinals.
Charles City junior Ashlyn Hoeft matched Williams for co-game-high honors with 14 points, which include a pair of off-the-glass 3-pointers.
Dani Stock was also in the double-figures (10 points) for the Comets, who finished the season with an overall 3-18 record.
For Stock, and for fellow Charles City seniors Carrie Field and Katie Mahler who both saw playing time in the fourth quarter, this was their last high school basketball game.
