Comets go 3-1 at NFV Tourney, lead NEIC after win over Vikings

WEST UNION — How do you respond after giving up 2 runs in the top of the ninth?
Rally for 3 in the bottom half.
That’s what the Charles City Comets did while propelling themselves to a 10-9 win over Solon as part of Saturday’s softball tournament hosted by North Fayette Valley.
Rachel Chambers had three hits and 2 runs batted in; Ava Ellis had three hits including a double; and Lydia Staudt, Ashlyn Hoeft, Sadie Gebel, Allie Cross and Alex Wohlers each had two hits for the Comets, who went 3-1 at the tournament.
Among the other Charles City victories was a 17-0 win over MFL-Mar-Mac. Kiki Connell was 3 for 3 with a double, drove in 2 runs, scored 3 herself and stole two bases for the Comets.
Hoeft was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBIs; Ellis was 2 for 3 with a double; and starter Dani Reetz and reliever Natalie White combined for a 1-hitter before the game was called after four innings.
The Comets’ third win was a 12-5 final over Union Community.
Chambers was 2 for 4 with a double, home run and 4 RBIs; and Staudt, Hoeft and Gebel each had two hits.
The Comets lost to Independence 4-1 during the tourney as the Mustangs avenged an 11-2 loss to Charles City during the Comets’ home-opener.
Independence freshman Allison Kleve limited the Comets to just two hits, both of which were from leadoff hitter Connell who also scored the team’s lone run.
* On Monday, the Comets seized sole possession of first place in the Northeast Iowa Conference with an 11-4 win over Decorah.
Charles City jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings before the Vikings cut the lead in half with 3 runs in the third.
The Comets quickly got those 3 runs back with a “majestic” 3-run HR shot by Chambers in the fourth.
Connell and Staudt each had 3 hits; Wohlers had 2 hits including an RBI-double; and Reetz picked up her sixth win of the season after striking out 7 in seven innings.
With its fifth-straight win, Charles City improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the NEIC.
