Kiki Connell posts fourth fastest women’s 3000-meter steeplechase time in Cyclone history

Charles City’s Kiki Connell, left, manages to hold off Waverly-Shell Rock’s Emma Hoins down the homestretch of the Class 3A Girls 1500-Meter Run during the 2021 State Track and Field Championships. Connell placed third in the race and also placed second in the Class 3A Girls 3000 during the meet while breaking a 36-year-old school record in the event.
Connell has continued her track career at Iowa State University, and has recently moved up to No. 4 amid the Cyclone women’s all-time list in the 3000 Steeplechase.
Press Staff Report
While shaving more than 17 seconds off her personal-record in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase during the Texas Relays held last weekend in Austin, Texas, Iowa State University sophomore Kiki Connell placed second in her section heat with a time of 10 minutes, 21.41 seconds — only .31 of a second behind section winner Ila Davis of Western Washington.
The effort moved Connell up to No. 4 amid the Cyclones’ all-time fastest times in the event.
Connell’s teammate, Janette Schraft, also posted a PR in the 3000 steeplechase as her time of 10:07.70 achieved in her section heat was the third fastest in Cyclone history.
Connell was an All-Missouri Valley Conference cross country runner for the University of Northern Iowa in 2021 before transferring to ISU the following winter.
Connell is a 2021 graduate of Charles City High School where she was a four-time state cross country state qualifier while setting the Comet school record in the girls 5K her senior year.
Connell also qualified to state in multiple events in track and field in all three seasons she competed — there was no state meet in 2020.
In her final high school track meet — the 2021 State T&F Championships — Connell placed fourth in the 800, third in the 1500 and runner-up in the 3000 while breaking a 36-year-old Charles City record in the latter event.
