ON Sat urday Nov. 14, 1987: The 1133rd Transportation Company out of Mason City, a National Guard company, held a training exercise in Charles City. It called for moving equipment between the high school, a truck parking lot and Westwood Park. Mock terrorists attempted to disrupt the operation.

“Soviet doctrine calls for infiltration (of the rear lines) before any overt action,” said Lt. Dan Thorsen, a coordinator of the exercise.

“The front line faces artillery, (the rear areas) face the best they have. They face people in our uniforms, speaking our language (who may have been) living in the area for years. People talk about atomic warfare, about biological and chemical warfare. Terrorism is the main threat.”
