things you might not know about Friday’s storm

1 BY THE NUMBERS, FRIDAY WAS A LITTLE UNUSUAL.

Normally, Charles City would have had 1.8 inches of snow by Nov. 20. Before the snow began to fall at about 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Charles City had none for 2015, according to the National Weather Service.

Before midnight, the Charles City Fire Department reported at least 8 to 9 inches of snowfall. By 2:30 a.m., 9.6 inches had fallen, breaking the record single-day snowfall record for Nov. 20, which was set in 1986 at just 5.5 inches.

The 1986 record still stands, however, at 12.6 inches of accumulation by Nov. 20.

2 PEOPLE TO THE NORTH, SOUTH, EAST AND WEST RECEIVED MORE SNOW.

To the south, Waverly had 12.7 inches, according to the Wartburg College Observatory.

To the northwest, Nora Springs had 10 inches, as did New Hampton to the east, the National Weather Service reports.

Here are some other area totals from the NWS: 10 inches in Marble Rock, 8.5 inches in Nashua, 8 inches in Ionia, 6.5 inches in Cresco and St. Ansgar, 5.5 inches in Colwell and 3.3 inches in Riceville.

3 HEAT FORCED EARLY DISMISSAL FROM CC SCHOOLS LAST TIME

Charles City Schools dismissed early (1:401:50 p.m.) because of the inclement weather. The last time the district emptied the schools early was because it was getting too hot.

On Sept. 3, Charles City Superintendent Dr. Dan Cox tweeted: “Due to the late summer heat/ humidity, Charles City Schools will dismiss 2 hours early on September 3 & 4.

4 FIRST CAR CRASH WAS ABOUT 30 MINUTES AFTER THE SNOW BEGAN

The first flakes of Friday’s storm started falling at about 12:15 p.m. At 12:47 p.m., with a slippery coating of snow on the roadway and limited visibility, Charles City Police were assisting with a car crash on the Brantingham Bridge.

The driver of a 2015 Chevrolet pickup slowed down because vehicles in front of him had.

A 2001 Nissan rear-ended the pickup and then swerved into oncoming traffic striking a 2010 Subaru. No injuries were reported. Details are in For the Record on page 3.

5 RRMR IOWA HALL OF PRIDE SCRIMMAGE WAS CANCELLED

The RRMR girls’ basketball team had a scrimmage scheduled for Friday night against Lake MIlls at home.

But because of the intense snowfall, the scrimmage was cancelled. There was talk of the cancellation the night before, but players remained hopeful. At the end of the day, no basketball was played in the nearly 10 inches of snow that fell in the Rockford area. The scrimmage will not be made up.
