CHARLES CITY — The Charles City girls varsity golf team proved just what it is capable of when the weather cooperates by way of a convincing 205-228 win over Oelwein, Friday at Cedar Ridge Golf Course.
The resounding win was due in large part to the outstanding performance of senior Jamie Sindlinger, who notched a medalist score of 42 (6 over) on the day, five strokes ahead of runner-up Amber Rosenstiel (47) of Oelwein.
Also standing out for Charles City was junior Gen Wandro, who shot at 51 — four strokes ahead of her mark of 55 set earlier in the week.
Juniors Mija Cotton and Abby Milligan rounded out Charles City’s top four, each carding a 56. Also competing for Charles City were senior Taylor Hoffman and sophomore Emma Williams, who finished with scores of 57 and 61, respectively.
“The constant improvement of everybody is what has impressed me the most,” Charles City coach Eric Johanningmeier said.
All six golfers for Charles City managed to improve their scores by at least two strokes over their previous outing against Decorah the Monday before. Most notable were Milligan and Cotton, who improve their scores by more than 10 strokes.
At the end of the day, the team has improved its 9-hole average from 219 to 213.66 after three outings.
Johanningmeier chalked up the improvement to the advent of fair weather over the past week affording the team ample opportunity to practice and work on their game.
“We had the ability to go out and work on a couple of things, and that really paid off for some of the girls,” said Johanningmeier, who went on to note that they could still use some work on their short game.
Charles City will host Crestwood today at Cedar Ridge. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
