Nearly 700 people joined Immaculate Conception Elementary School for lunch.

On the first day of Catholic Schools Week, families of students and local supporting businesses celebrated a luau-themed picnic to stave cold Iowa temperatures away.

Following the picnic, sixth grade students jumped into teacher mode to lead kindergarteners through fifth graders in student-planned STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities — from egg drops, Cubelets, tower building and more.

Monday is just the start of the week-long school celebrations — which end Friday with a school birthday party and the first-ever IC Hall of Fame induction.

The induction is open to the public and begins in the IC gym at 9 a.m.
