A steady stream of blood donors flowed to the gymnasium at Charles City High on Tuesday to donate blood.
The blood drive was conducted by the Red Cross, with quite a bit of help from students at the school.
Lilly Usher, a freshman at Charles City, said her biology teacher, Donna Forsyth, picked a group of about 10 students to help with the drive.
“It’s all student run,” Usher said.
Usher said there had been a pretty steady stream of people giving blood since they opened up the gym at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
“We’ve had quite a few walk-ins, which is really good.”
Usher said she thought the blood drive had been a pretty successful event.
Jamie Caffrey of Charles City said she donates blood a couple of times a year.
“It’s an easy way to give back and to help somebody else,” she said.
Caffrey’s session had no problems or complications, and she said she enjoyed her free snack.
“That’s really the reason I do it, for the free cookie,” she joked.
According to the school district, the drive ended up with 86 presenting donors and collected 68 total units of blood. Using the calculation of three lives saved per pint, the drive saved 204 total lives.
