Heat index expected to reach triple-digits on Friday in Charles City area

The National Weather Service is predicting that Friday is going to be a hot one throughout Iowa.

In the Charles City area, temperatures could climb into the mid-to-upper 90s, and when coupled with oppressive humidities, heat indices are expected to range from 100 to 110 degrees.

The warmth starts Thursday and will continue into Saturday, but Friday is shaping up to be the hottest day. Peak heat will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. The NWS recommends the public to plan ahead for heat-related stresses, avoid exposure, stay hydrated and adjust outdoor plans to avoid the peak hours of heat.

Heat-related illnesses can occur in as little as 30 minutes. Children, pets and the elderly are especially susceptible to the heat.

The forecast is calling for a high of 85 degrees on Thursday afternoon, with a low around 72 Thursday evening. Friday is expected to be sunny and hot, with a high near 95, high humidity, and gusty winds approaching 20 miles per hour.

The high Saturday is expected to be 89, while on Sunday the high temperature will be a more seasonal 82. There will be a 60 percent chances of showers and thunderstorms in Charles City on Saturday and an 80 percent chance Saturday night.
