The party’s just getting started.

A festive spirit abounded on Tuesday in Charles City – full of laughter,  good times and great food.

The Fourth of July week got kicked into high gear as entertainment and celebration weren’t hard to find on this patriotic day packed full of things to do.

The fun and frivolity started with the kids parade around Central Park, but the fun didn’t stop there.

There was a cheerleading performance, all kinds of kids’ games, a BMX stunt show, a mechanical bull and live music. A matinee – “Solo: A Star Wars Story” – showed at Charles Theater and youth sand volleyball was played at Comet Bowl. Kids age 12 and under could swim for free at the Lion’s Field Pool, where there was also a penny dive.

Things start early on Wednesday with the Firecracker 5K Run/Walk. The Independence Day Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. and the celebration in the park will continue throughout the day. There will also be a farmer’s market from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m in the park.

A municipal band concert starts at 7:30 p.m. along the riverside behind the Charles City Public Library. The big fireworks show should start around dusk to cap off the evening.
