The Charles City Fourth of July celebration in Central Park was fun while it lasted on Wednesday — about three and a half hours — but Mother Nature decided to put an abrupt end to the Independence Day festivities with a sudden thunderstorm beginning at about 3:30 p.m.

The Firecracker 5K Run/Walk and the Independence Day Parade Wednesday morning before the torrential downpour went off with no problems, however the farmer’s market scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. never really got started. The afternoon fun also included live music and entertainment and food and drinks.

This evening, the Charles City Municipal Band’s Patriotic Concert will be moved to the North Grand Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

The fireworks show is scheduled to start around dusk to cap off the evening. There is no word yet on whether that will go on tonight or be rescheduled. The forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms throughout Wednesday evening.
