There were smiles and excitement, there was some apprehension, and there were even a few tears on Thursday as parents dropped their kids off at Washington Elementary School in Charles City for the first day of the 2018-19 school year.
Teachers, administrators and staff greeted the young people with cheers, high-fives and a few hugs.
One young student was overheard saying, “I love school! I missed this so much!”
Another student was not quite as optimistic: “Mom? Why do I have to go to school? I don’t want to.”
Eventually, all the kids were brought inside safely, and hopefully the few who were reluctant realized it wasn’t quite as bad as they thought it would be.
