You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.
There was a lot of celebration and a few tears Thursday, the last day of school for students throughout the Charles City Community School District. The school day ended at 11:20 a.m. for high school and middle school students and 11:30 a.m. for students at the elementary schools.
First and second grade students at Washington Elementary spent their last morning of school at the park at Lions Field. There was a kickball tournament, followed by fun activities.
June 6 is the latest Charles City has held classes in recent memory. The last day of school was originally scheduled for May 29, but 11 days of weather-related cancellations this past winter pushed the final day back. The district is obligated to make up the lost hours.
Teachers in the district may have breathed a sigh of relief once the students were gone Thursday, but they still have work to do. The last day for teachers in the district is Tuesday, June 11.
The summer break will be a short one. The first day of school for students in the 2019-20 school year will be Friday, Aug. 23.
