Back in the 80s, they might have called it “righteous,” or perhaps even “gnarly.” Either way, most of the Charles City residents at Central Park on Friday were totally “stoked.”

A 1980s theme, good food and music, fun and games and plenty of community companionship were all the rage at Charles City’s first “Party in the Park” of 2019.

The summer series in Central Park, organized by Community Revitalization and made possible through the support of local businesses, returned for its 17th season Friday and included live music, food and beverage vendors, a beer garden and a wide range of children’s activities, all under sunny blue skies.

Admission was free and the “80’s Night” theme featured the band Redline, which played classic rock music, and concentrated on hit tunes from that decade.

Sponsors of Friday’s event were Cambrex Charles City, First Security Bank & Trust, Larry Pump CPA, Fareway, the Charles City Press and Zoetis.

The evening included free inflatable rides, courtesy of Zoetis, and a 1980s hairstyle contest. Children’s activities included Boy Scout peddle cars, The Bridge Barrel Train, ring toss, Bethany Alliance 9 Square, I.C. School mini golf and carnival-style games, along with the Lost Llamas 4-H Club pool search game.

Food vendors were Black Dog BBQ, Hy-Vee, Island Grill, Maria’s Tacos, along with Here’s the Scoop ice cream, the Rotary Popcorn Wagon and The Cookie Doughtique.

The next Party in the Park will be June 21, which will be “Country Night.” Future events scheduled will be “Family Game Night” on July 12, “Tailgating Night” on July 26 and “Retro Night” on Aug. 9. Bands will be Highway 9 on June 21, the Jay Clyde Band on July 26 and Endless Summer on Aug. 9.
