For about 35 seconds Thursday morning, it looked like it might rain.

Maybe the force of hundreds of flags waving blew the storm away. Or maybe it was the giant, inflatable Elvis that changed the weather’s course.

Regardless, the showers never arrived during the morning, as thousands of citizens decked in red, white and blue lined the streets of Charles City for the 2019 Independence Day Parade under mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s. A consistent breeze kept it just cool enough.

As usual, dozens of farm implements — large and small, new and old — impressed the onlookers during the hour-plus-long spectacle, while trucks from several different area fire departments whirred their sirens.

Led by a color guard and floats representing men and women in the military, patriotic displays included horseback riders, Harley riders, community groups, businesses, politicians and much more, helping America’s Hometown celebrate America’s birth.

Throw in a marching band, plenty of patriotic rock and country music, dozens of stuffed mascots and candy tossed to the kids, and Charles City’s Hometown Parade was complete.

Independence Day Parade Float Winners were the Charles City High School softball team for Best Open Class, Steve Reams and his 1979 Ford T-13 for Best Antique Vehicle, Zoetis for Best Business entry and Hope for Life for Best Non-Profit. The National 19th Amendment Society won the Chamber Choice Award, while Bread of Life won the Mayor’s Award.
