Some members of the Charles City FFA dug deep — literally — and got down and dirty last week.

On Wednesday, 13 members of the FFA traveled to Iowa Falls to compete in the North Central District FFA Soils Evaluation Contest, among 60 teams from around Iowa.

Charles City FFA director Bret Spurgin said the FFA members are taking a NIACC soils science class this fall, and this contest was an assessment for them.

The event is designed to provide students an opportunity to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of soils evaluation.

Students judge four different pits of soil to evaluate certain properties of the soil and make recommendations for land use, and also complete a knowledge test.

Three different Charles City teams competed well, as the team of Quincy Bill, Cael Ruzicka, Drew Staudt and Ally Faulkner finished 10th overall; the team of Alec Staudt, Marissa Daniels, Sarah Mitchell and Lynn Hoeft placed 12th; and the team of Dan Laube, Cassie Debower, Bronson Forsyth and Jace Landt finished 20th out of the 60 teams competing.

Charles City’s Sydney Peterson also took part in the contest as an individual.
