The lights have been on in the evenings, Monday through Friday, since early April at several high school stadiums around the state of Iowa, as the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association encouraged school districts to light the fields up to show support for students in the communities that the schools represent.

Charles City has been participating, turning the lights on at 8 p.m. each weekday, and the lights at the baseball and softball field at the new athletic complex on the Charles City High School and Middle School campus were turned blue this week, in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week. The observance is meant to pay tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. It is celebrated May 15 of each year.
