For Charles City’s newest police officer, law enforcement is something that runs in the family.

Dylan Isakson, a 2015 Charles City High School graduate who joined the department in April, said like many teens he chose a few careers he might be interested in pursuing.

“It helped that my uncle (Officer Lenny Luft) is on the police force here too,” he said. “As a kid growing up, having him around, it was just kind of one of those things. I thought, ‘Maybe that’s something I want to do.’”

Isakson, 23, was raised in Colwell, which is part of the Charles City School District.

After graduating from high school, he worked in construction and had a few other jobs.

Isakson worked at the Floyd County Jail, run by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, for 2½ years. He said he received a lot of on-the-job training, so it was good preparation for becoming a police officer.

Since joining the CCPD, Isakson has gone on patrol. However, he’s still in the training process.

“It’s been a lot of learning,” he said. “It’s been fun.”

It’s also been a lot of hard work, but it helps that he’s familiar with the community, he said.

Isakson will attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in the fall.
