Fossil and Prairie Center holds open house
Kids watch the turtles as Floyd County Conservation naturalist Heidi Reams feeds them on the other side of the glass at the Floyd County Fossil and Prairie Park Preserve Saturday. Visitors were welcome as the center, near Rockford, hosted an open house Saturday afternoon. The center is celebrating its 20th year of being open. People young and old checked out the new exhibits and searched for fossils at the preserve.
During the Devonian Period, 365 million years ago, Iowa was an ocean. Most of the fossils currently found at the Fossil and Prairie Park Preserve are from the shallow sea environment and are marine invertebrates.
The park is open from Sunrise to Sunset. The center is open weekends from 1-4 p.m. and Memorial Day through Labor Day from 1-4 p.m. daily. (Press photo James Grob.)
