A Memorial Day service to honor and remember the nation’s veterans will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 31, on the Floyd County courthouse grounds near the Veterans Memorial.

The traditional service will begin with a welcome by Todd Prichard, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves; followed by the raising of the colors by the Boy Scouts, honor squad presentation, the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem.

The invocation will be given by Robert Williams, lead pastor at the Bridge Church in Charles City, followed by the Memorial Day proclamation by Mayor Dean Andrews, then music by the Charles City High School band.

The American Legion Auxiliary will place a wreath, followed by the playing of taps and closing comments.

Phillip Knighten, a Charles City Council member who worked with Iowa state Rep. Prichard, D-Charles City, to organize the remembrance, said lunch would be served following the program at the Charles City VFW, 1505 N Grand Ave., and all are welcome.

Persons attending the event are suggested to bring lawn chairs. In case of rain the service will be held at the VFW.
