The Charles City High School speech improvisational acting duo of Christian Howe and Griffin Franksain presented their group improvisation performance at the All-State Festival for large group speech events at the Iowa State Center in Ames on Saturday.

In improvisational acting, the group has to choose one topic from a list of three, and is given two minutes to prepare a scene lasting five minutes or less. Howe and Franksain improvised to the selected theme of “Waiting in pain at the dentist’s office.”

The CCHS speech students will now concentrate on individual speech categories, with district competitions this Saturday in Forest City. State individual speech contests will be March 12 and the All-State Festival for individual speech events will be held March 28 at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Individuals performing in the musical theatre category will include Anders Haglund, who will perform “Run Away With Me,” Teagan Prigge, who will perform “Somewhere That’s Green” and Kaity Heckers, who will perform “Mira.”

In the individual prose category, Sophia Jensen will perform “Death by Scrabble” and Shemaiah Lara will perform “How To Be A Person.”

In poetry, Lara will perform “Learning the Hard Way,” Hannah DeVore will perform “Hymn to Apollo” and Ellie Gassman will perform “Here. Have a Bandaid.”

In the public address category, DaShawn Griffin will present “Kennedy’s Space Race Speech.”

In individual acting, Blake Hoeft will present “Joker’s Monologue.”

In lit program, DeVore will present “The American Dream is a Lie.”

In story telling, Addison Tracey will present “Regards to the Man in the Moon.”
